It’s time for the September Facet Design Challenge! We invite our readers and makers to create or share a work of jewelry in keeping with our next theme, GEOMETRY.

Get our your protractor and start thinking about sharp right angles and sinuous curves!

The place where math, art, and jewelry combine is a curious intersection. A designer needs to ensure that their piece has structure and balance in addition to being attractive. Earrings, necklaces, brooches and other jewelry often feature geometric shapes, and that’s no accident. Multiplying by 3.14 can create the perfect arcs, and the intersection of perpendicular wires and threads can form lovely, interesting angles. Shape, shadow and light can all come into play, whether the jewelry piece is two-dimensional pendant or a six-sided vessel. We all use cones, tubes, cubes and cylinders; let’s make good use of our prisms, pyramids, ovals and octagons!

How will you bring GEOMETRY into your jewelry-making during September? Will your piece have symmetry and mirror images, be shaped as a rhombus or a trapezoid, or feature a scalene triangle or parallel lines?  We would love for all beaders, metalsmiths, clay artists and other makers to interpret this theme in their own way and produce a work as creative as it is beautiful.

Any time between now and September 28, submit a photo of your work and a brief description of how your piece fits the theme. At the conclusion of the contest, the Facet editorial staff will vote, and THREE WINNERS will be awarded. There will be three categories of winners: Stitching; Metal, Wire, Clays & Resin; and Stringing, Fiber & Cord. The winners will be announced in early October.

We will share photos of the winning pieces on our social media sites and in our newsletter, so be sure to include links to your personal website, Etsy shop, Instagram or anywhere else that our readers can view more of your work. If you'd like to participate in a Five Question Spotlight about your work and your inspiration, we'd love to run it on Facet! 

You may submit two images for each monthly contest.
